Back again! I'm trying to be more ~active~ and whatnot.
It's been a pretty wild couple of months for me. I started seeing someone in the beginning of October, met a bunch of NUF's at a Halloween party, decided to move back in with my dad (oh fun), and turned 22!
( Here's the photographic evidence. )

| «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley |
[18 Nov 2008|11:53am] |
Brave New World is Huxley's most famous novel and as startling today as the day it was written because most of what Huxley postulated upon has happened to some degree or another. We are given a glimpse into our future if we continue on the path we are currently on. There will be a drug that makes it all okay - in the book it is called soma; in real life, take your pick from Prozac, Zoloft. John the Savage commits suicide soon after taking soma, guilt and despair born of serotonin depletion. The drug is said to be better than (promiscuous) sex - the only sex brave new worlders practice. However, a regimen of soma does not deliver anything sublime or life-enriching. It is suggested that the price of universal happiness will be the sacrifice of the most hallowed shibboleths of our culture: "motherhood", "home", "family", "freedom", even "love". In BNW, happiness derives from consuming mass-produced goods, sports such as Obstacle Golf and Centrifugal Bumble-puppy, promiscuous sex, and” the feelies.” The novel is seamlessly written with a tight plot that never wavers. The original ideas and the way they are expressed remain fresh today. The characters make you believe in what they are going through. If you like science fiction you must read Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited. You will never forgive yourself if you do not. And just amazing work in my opinion... Download ebook... |

| Book #49 |
[17 Nov 2008|11:04pm] |
Book #49 Book Title: Hard Rock to Solid Rock Author: Darrell Huckaby Category: nonfiction; religious; inspirational # of pages: 254 My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com):Lenny Stadler emerged from a life of drugs, sex, and rock-and-roll to become a living example of the transforming power of a risen Lord. Today he is the Senior Pastor of one of the largest United Methodist churches in his native state. Dr. Stadler holds a Masters of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary. It is Stadler’s hope that in allowing Huckaby to tell the story of his journey, others will realize the possibilities that the of Jesus Christ offers for their lives. Huckaby does tell Stadler’s story, injecting his own inimitable blend of Southern humor and insight into the human condition. The result is a work that is certain to keep you entertained and make you think. It could possibly change your life. Hard Rock to Solid Rock tells how God nurtured the seeds of faith that had been planted in this young man at an early age and enabled them to grow and flourish through almost total darkness. It is a fascinating story of one man’s journey and a strong testimony to the power of God’s amazing grace. From the very first words of Hard Rock to Solid Rock, author Darrell Huckaby captures the desperation in the life of Lenny Stadler--a native of a small town--a Baby Boomer who was determined to ride the wave of Southern Rock to fame and fortune. However, God had other plans for this young man's life and Huckaby tells, in his own unique style, how one man was changed forever by the saving grace of Jesus Christ. It is Lenny Stadler's hope that in allowing his friend, Darrell Huckaby, to tell the story of his journey, others will realize the possibilities that the power of Jesus Christ offers for their lives. Huckaby does tell Stadler's story, injecting his own inimitable blend of southern humor and insight into the human condition. The result is a work that is certain to keep you entertained, inspired, and to make you think. It could possibly change your life! ...The yellow sports car looked strangely out of place, zooming along the rural back roads near Reidsville, NC...For that matter, so too did the long-haired young man behind the wheel. Anyone who looked into the young man's eyes would have found them to be filled with fear; fear and hopelessness. They were the eyes of a dead man. Spiritually and emotionally dead, at least -- and he was now determined to end his physical life as well. The speedometer needle soared as he drove his car faster and faster. The tires squealed as he pushed the high-performance engine to its very limits...
My Thoughts: I found this to be an uplifting and inspirational story that I have heard before because Lenny Stadler was my former preacher when I lived in North Carolina. However I hadn't heard the story in as much detail as Huckaby told in this book. Every year Lenny gave his testimony and every year it was such a fascinating experience to hear the transformation that Lenny went through to get to where he is today. If you like a great religious and inspirational stories then this is a book that you should read.
Books read this year: 49/50. I'm 98% done!
Next read(s): I am not sure but I just have to read one more book to meet my goal!

| Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman by Haruki Murakam |
[17 Nov 2008|11:47pm] |

Title: Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman Author: Haruki Murakami Pages: 436 Language: English Summary: From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore and The Wind-up Bird Chronicles comes this superb collection of twenty-four stories that generously expresses Murakami’s mastery of the form. From the surreal to the mundane, these stories exhibit his ability to transform the full range of human experience in ways that are instructive, surprising, and relentlessly entertaining. Here are animated crows, a criminal monkey, and an iceman, as well as the dreams that shape us and the things we might wish for. Whether during a chance reunion in Italy, a romantic exile in Greece, a holiday in Hawaii, or in the grip of everyday life, Murakami’s characters confront grievous loss, or sexuality, or the glow of a firefly, or the impossible distances between those who ought to be closest of all. My rating: 4/5
My Thoughts: ( this way )
My list: here. Progress: 40/40. I’m 100% done with this year’s challenge! I’ll aim for 50 next year. Next read: The brief wondrous life of Oscar Wao, Junot Díaz

| Book #48 |
[17 Nov 2008|03:06pm] |

Book #48 Book Title: A Christmas Carol Author: Charles Dickens Category: fiction; holiday read; # of pages: 88 My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A+ Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com):The story of Ebenezer Scrooge opens on a Christmas Eve as cold as Scrooge's own heart. That night, he receives three ghostly visitors: the terrifying spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Each takes him on a heart-stopping journey, yielding glimpses of Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit, the horrifying spectres of Want and Ignorance, even Scrooge's painfully hopeful younger self. Will Scrooge's heart be opened? Can he reverse the miserable future he is forced to see?
My Thoughts: This book just gets better and better every time I read it. My family and I used to read this book together and now that I have grown up, I am keeping with the Christmas tradition and reading it every year. I love the story and I cannot recommend it enough! I hope that everyone will read this story during the holiday season.
Books read this year: 48/50. I'm 96% done!
Next read(s): I am about to start Hard Rock to Solid Rock by Darrell Huckaby.

| Looking for recommendations - Fantasy/romance |

Hi, all. I'm assuming this kind of post is allowed, but let me know if it's not cool...
Anyway, I was looking for recommendations. I'm a big fan of Juliet Marillier and the Sevenwaters Trilogy. I'm looking for similar books - fantasy/romance, particularly retellings of fairytales or folklore. I'm definitely searching for books that do have some sort of romance, not just strictly fantasy. I'd also be interested in sci-fi/romance, too.
Can anyone recommend any authors or specific books I should look into?
TIA!
